The hotel business in Oweri is BOOMING

By Chukwudi Iwuchukwu

I arrived in Owerri with an early morning flight for the wedding of my senior friend Obata-Obie N’Oduma Obata-Obie N’Oduma

The flight was at 7:00 am, so I barely caught any sleep the previous night.

That was why, immediately, the flight dropped.

My next mission was to find a super comfy hotel. I could catch some sleep before the wedding proper.

What I experienced that morning was a shocker and a reminder of how lucrative the hotel business was in Owerri.

A friend recommended 5 good hotels for me before I arrived, but to my surprise

The hotels were fully booked, and the guests who slept over the previous night were yet to check out.

This was how I spent the next 3 hours moving from hotel to hotel, begging for a space so I could catch some good sleep before the event I came for starts.

I did not believe it; it was the same story: our hotel room is filled up, and we are sorry, sir.

The last hotel I visited and they repeated the same line, out of exasperation, I did not know when I said “sorry to you too” to the charming young lady I met at the front desk who repeated the same we are sorry line.

I eventually ended up at BON Hotel Owerri; the time was 10:45 am at that time, and I was super exhausted as I was half asleep, half awake.

I told the taxi driver, Let me stay here; I don’t have any strength again to move around.

But what I did not have in my bingo card was that I had to wait for an extra 2 hours again at the hotel lounge for the guest to check out and for the porter to get the room ready.

BON hotel is a pricey, expensive hotel brand, and yet, they had a full capacity the previous night.

It was at that moment it hit me why people are building hotels in Owerri.

It is a lucrative business that gives insane, crazy returns on investment.

I’m just thinking about this.

There is something that young people in Owerri are doing to make money that empowers them to sleep over in a hotel on this massive scale, and that business must be a good one.

Because come to think of it, hotels in Lagos are not this busy during a regular weekend.

I’m not sure.

After a sleepless night, I arrived at 7am, only to find that ALL the hotels I had bookmarked were fully booked!

Spent 3 hours hotel-hopping, begging for a room, until I finally found solace at BON Hotel Oweri… only to wait another 2 hours for a room to be ready!

The hotel business in Oweri is BOOMING! I’m talking insane ROI! What are the young people in Oweri doing to afford sleeping over in hotels on a massive scale? #Oweri #HotelBusiness #WeddingDiaries”
