Breaking news: IPOB Lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Takes Over Case of Igbo Boy from Ezza, Ebonyi State, Sentenced to Death in Lagos.
On November 13, Anambra Current News reported that Sampson Ogochukwu, a young man from Ebonyi State residing in Lagos, pleaded for assistance after being sentenced to death by the Lagos State High Court for an alleged crime he claims to have no involvement in.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, legal counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), announced that his firm has taken up Ogochukwu’s case, working to secure the court records detailing the proceedings that led to this death sentence.
In a widely circulated video, Ogochukwu shared his distressing story. He alleged that in 2017, his friend Chuks Viviana Okonkwo from Imo State, who helped him relocate from Onitsha to Lagos and assisted him in securing a job as a security guard in Lekki, betrayed him. Ogochukwu claimed that Okonkwo brought four accomplices to his workplace, bound him, and forced him to guide them to his employer, whom they subsequently robbed, stealing a car and other valuables. After the robbery, the assailants reportedly put Ogochukwu in the car boot, later releasing him with N100,000 and urging him to leave Lagos. However, when Ogochukwu returned to inform his employer of what transpired, he was arrested and accused of masterminding the robbery, while the actual perpetrators, later apprehended, were acquitted by the court.
Ejiofor, in a recent statement titled “In Response to the Trending Call for Justice,” confirmed that his firm has deployed a lawyer to the court to retrieve all relevant legal documents regarding Ogochukwu’s conviction. The statement emphasized that Ejiofor’s firm is handling this public interest case pro bono, underlining that any person charged with a capital offense has the right to legal representation. According to Ogochukwu, he had no legal counsel during his trial—a point that Ejiofor highlighted as their primary concern as they prepare for an appeal.
“Our priority,” Ejiofor stated, “is to access the complete court records, review witness testimonies, and examine the evidence and conclusions drawn by the judge. This process will help determine our legal approach for Ogochukwu’s appeal.”
In the interim, Ejiofor appealed for the public’s patience, assuring that the case is being handled strictly within legal requirements.
