Why My Father Married 30 Wives and Had 108 Children – Governor Nwifuru
Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has shed light on the unique family history of his father, Ezekiel Nwifuru Nwankpu, who married over 30 wives and fathered 108 children. The governor explained that this decision was largely influenced by the humiliation and envy his father faced within their Agbaja community.
Speaking during the coronation of his father as the traditional ruler of the newly created Oferekpe Agbaja autonomous community, Governor Nwifuru revealed that his father initially married over 30 wives. However, some left the family due to their inability to bear children, leaving 19 wives at one point. Today, he has 17 wives and boasts a legacy of 108 children, including 21 university graduates, among whom is the governor himself.
Governor Nwifuru recounted how his father rose to prominence through hard work as a successful farmer, a feat that attracted envy and led to ostracism by relatives and neighbours. In response to these challenges, Ezekiel Nwankpu decided to marry multiple wives, not only to build companionship but also to create a support system that helped him pursue his aspirations.
The event, which marked the official recognition of the Oferekpe Agbaja autonomous community by the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, was attended by prominent figures, including former governors Sam Egwu, Martin Elechi, and David Umahi, alongside other stakeholders. The community comprises 17 villages and was formally established this year.
During his speech, Governor Nwifuru praised his father for his resilience and hospitality, describing him as a man who loves and cares for his wives, children, relatives, and neighbors. The governor also encouraged his father to use his new position as a traditional ruler to promote peace, equity, and justice in their community.
“Do not use this revered position to seek revenge or perpetuate injustice,” he advised. “Instead, let it serve as a beacon of unity, fairness, and service to humanity.”
Governor Nwifuru emphasised that his father’s story is a testament to overcoming adversity and building strength through family and community support.
The coronation ceremony symbolised a new chapter for the Oferekpe Agbaja community, with hopes for lasting peace and development under its new traditional ruler.
