Anambra Assembly Suspends Ayamelum Lawmaker, Hon. Udemezue
The Anambra State House of Assembly has slammed a three-month suspension on Hon. Abuchi Bernard Udemezue, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, following his controversial social media posts alleging corruption and marginalization within the legislature.
The suspension, announced during plenary at the Assembly complex in Awka, came after a matter of urgent public importance was moved by Hon. Tony Mobike, member representing Aguata 2 constituency. Mobike accused Udemezue of sharing “damaging content” online that undermined the integrity and image of the legislative institution.
Hon. Udemezue, a first-term lawmaker on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had earlier taken to social media to allege that his constituency was sidelined in the sharing of constituency allowances, raising questions about the fairness of fund distribution across the state’s 30 constituencies. He also made broader claims of systemic rot, including controversial remarks surrounding the death of a former assembly member, late Justice Azuka, who once represented Onitsha North 1 constituency.

Udemezue’s political journey makes the matter even more significant. In the 2023 elections, he stunned the political establishment by polling 12,993 votes to defeat then-Speaker Uchenna Okafor of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who had 11,445 votes. That victory reshaped political dynamics in Ayamelum and positioned Udemezue as a bold voice in the assembly.
With his suspension, Udemezue is barred from all legislative duties, including plenary sessions, committee activities, and constituency representation, until the three-month period lapses. The assembly leadership has not disclosed why it settled on three months, but the measure signals a strong warning against what it views as public dissent capable of eroding institutional dignity.
As of press time, Hon. Udemezue has yet to issue an official reaction to the suspension. However, his earlier posts suggest he intends to continue pushing for accountability and transparency in governance, setting the stage for what could become a deeper political battle in Anambra’s legislative Space.
